GALION — A 65-year-old Galion woman died in a fire Friday evening at the Cedargate apartment complex on Ohio 598, just north of Heise Park Lane.

According to Galion fire chief Phil Jackson, Sherry Barker, 65, was trapped in the fire at 81 Cedargate Court, and died on the scene.

The Galion Fire Department responded to the structure fire at 5:23 p.m. When firefighters arrived at the multi-family dwelling, they found moderate smoke and fire involvement on the end apartment.

The Crawford County Coroner’s office and The State of Ohio Fire Marshal’s office were called in to assist in the investigation. As of Monday morning, the cause of the fire remains undetermined.

Moderate damage was sustained to that one apartment only,with preliminary estimates being $5,000 in property and $4,000 in content damage.

Barker’s body was taken to Lucas County where an autopsy will be performed.
