Highland got back on the winning track Wednesday with a 9-5 win over Fredericktown in a game featuring a wild finish.
The Scots broke a 1-1 tie by scoring one in the third inning in the road contest. The score remained 2-1 until the top of the seventh inning, when Highland picked up seven runs. The Freddies tried to come back in the bottom of the inning, scoring four, but the Scots were able to slam the door for the win.
Conner Ulrey earned the win for Highland. He also tallied two hits in the game. Andrew Stillwell had a double and single, while both Chase Beam and Max Schreiber added doubles.
Northmor suffered their second extra-inning loss in three games on Wednesday, as host Elgin came from behind to snare a 3-2 victory.
The Knights scored runs in both the first and second innings, but Elgin tied the game with two in the sixth. From there, neither team scored until the bottom of the 10th, when the Comets tallied the winning run.
Bryan Hammond took the mound in the bottom of the 10th and suffered the loss. Jake Farley pitched the first nine innings, striking out 11, walking three and giving up five hits, while surrendering two unearned runs. Farley also had two singles, while Sam Eichorn added a double.
“Jake pitched as well as you can pitch in this one,” said head coach Buck Workman. “The unearned runs are getting us right now. We can’t afford to give up unearned runs and expect to win ball games against the teams on our schedule.”
Mount Gilead Indians
The MG baseball team could not capitalize on 10 hits in suffering an 8-3 loss to visiting East Knox Wednesday.
MG lead 3-2 after the first two innings, but were held scoreless the rest of the way. The Bulldogs tied the score in the third inning and then scored one in the fourth, three in the fifth and one more in the sixth as they gradually pulled away.
Noah Arrington, who suffered the loss, and Ben Hayes combined to give up 13 hits, while striking out five and walking one.
Offensively, Arrington had three singles, while both Dustin McAvoy and Jake Wayt added doubles.
