Girls tennis: Galion, Crestline bow out in sectional tournament

Galion and Crestline competed at the Div. II girls tennis sectional tournament last week at Shelby High School.

Galion’s Katelyn Smith and Kaylyn Gimble each won two matches before being eliminated from the tournament. Cassidy Ivy and the doubles team of Dani Court and Tori Chandler picked up a win before falling out the competition.

Crestline’s Abby Stair earned a win in the singles competition, while teammates Katlyn Stull and Maddie Cultice won their first doubles match.

Smith defeated Amy Williams of Ontario in the opening round, rebounding from a set down to win, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. Smith advanced to the third round with a 6-0, 6-3 victory against Lillia Hite of Edison. Lexington’s Sylvia Goldsmith then eliminated Smith from contention with a straight sets win, 6-0, 6-0.

Gimble opened the tournament with a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Carlee Gibson of Willard. She then dispatched Taylor Weirich of Clear Fork in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, to reach the third round. Katie Volz of Lexington bumped Gimble from the tournament, 6-0, 6-1.

Ivy defeated Danielle Prederie of Bucyrus, 6-2, 6-0, in the first round. Shelby’s Katie Bowman ended Ivy’s tournament run with a 6-0, 6-0 win in the second round.

Court and Chandler squared off with Crestline’s Ellen Dailey and Soren Murphy in the first round of doubles play. Court and Chandler prevailed, 6-0, 6-3. The Galion pair was then eliminated by Norwalk’s Karlee Talkington and Johnna Thomas in the second round, 6-0, 6-1.

Galion’s Kiersten Gifford and Marisa Brenich lost to the Edison team of Kaur and Knowles in the first round, 6-1, 6-0.

Stair rolled to a straight sets win over Clear Fork’s Hannah Dion in the opening round, 6-1, 6-2, but lost to Shelby’s Katie Bowman, 6-0, 6-0.

Olivia Dowell dropped a straight sets contest to Norwalk’s Jasmine Ashakih, 6-0, 6-1.

Michaela Jeffrey of Crestline lost to Celina Kelly of Bucyrus, 6-1, 6-4.

Stull and Cultice defeated Allen and Thomas from Mansfield Senior, 6-3, 6-3, but dropped their next match to Norwalk’s Lauren Steffanni and Kaitlyn Stoll, 6-1, 6-0.

Sylvia Goldsmith of Lexington defeated teammate Kristen Geyer, 6-2, 6-1, to win the sectional championship and advance to the district competiton on Wednesday at Bowling Green. Geyer will also play in the district tournament. Natalie Zitko of St. Paul and Katie Bowman of Shelby also advanced to the district tournament.

Lexington’s Jordan Traxler and Maya Ahmed defeated teammates Maddi Mueller and Hayleigh Tucker, 6-1, 6-3, to win the sectional championship. Those two teams along with both Norwalk teams, Lauren Steffanni and Kaitlyn Stoll and Karlee Talkington and Johnna Thomas, advanced to the district tournament.
