Porsche is the featured marque for this year’s Vintage Grand Prix weekend at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, taking place June 26-28, with everything from Boxsters to Targas on display over the three day event.

The Sportscar Vintage Racing Association is one of the oldest and largest of the vintage racing organizations in the United States, with 11 racing groups featuring names like Ferrari, Lola, Mustang, Triumph Spitfire, Trans-Am and Aston-Martin. With practice runs set for Thursday and Friday, the Vintage Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio weekend will feature some three dozen sprints, mini-races, as well as two Enduro races and two special series this year featuring Porsche, which celebrates its 65th anniversary in North America.

Not only will there be Porsche models in a museum-like display for aficionados to enjoy, the two racing series will show off the Porsche in its natural habitat, on the track in full bore competition.

Mid-Ohio will also serve as the final launch point of two vintage Porsche series that are running throughout the summer: the Stuttgart Cup and the Mission Foods GT3 Cup Trophy USA by Car Amigo.

To qualify for the year-end points race and team championships in both, competitors must participate in five races and as Mid-Ohio represents the sixth of 10 races, cars must at least begin racing at the Ohio course and then also participate in the final four races if they have not yet run.

“The Mid-Ohio Vintage Grand Prix is always a great way to kick-off our season,” said Craig Rust, President of Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. “This event celebrates the cars and they are the true stars this weekend. With well over 250 entrants there really is something for everybody.”

Tony Parella, President and CEO of the SVRA, details how things work on a usual race weekend once the sprints have begun.

“We green flag the cars in that particular sprint onto the track, they race for their alloted time, usually 30 minutes, and once the race is done, we make sure to clear the track of any crashes and/or debris, and green flag the next bunch onto the track, ready to race. And it goes like this for hours. So one race will have a rolling start shortly after 1:15 p.m., and the next will go at 1:45 p.m. and so on.”

With the slogan, “Some people collect art, we race it,” SVRA is a perfect curtain raiser for the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course’s 2015 racing season.

British Car Showdown and Concours d’Elegance

Two popular, traditional aspects of the SVRA weekend return in 2015. The British Car Showdown includes British classics and various nostalgic forms of British automotive innovation. The 17th annual British Car Showdown guarantees something of interest for everyone.

Classics of all makes and models and colors, shapes and sizes will be on display throughout the day for the Concours d’Elegance with the beautiful cars participating in this show as they take a trip around the track at lunch.
