CALEDONIA — After Monday’s disappointing loss on the road against the Mohawk Lady Warriors, the Galion Lady Tigers volleyball squad was right back in action on Tuesday. For this road contest, it was Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference foe, the River Valley Lady Vikings.
Despite dropping the first set, Galion rallied back to earn the victory in four sets; 16-25, 25-14, 25-18, 25-17. With the victory, the Lady Tigers are back at .500 with a 2-2 overall mark and they currently sit at 2-0 within the MOAC.
Serving was a key element in the win for Galion as the team went 67/83 at the line, leading to 45 points and 10 team aces. Leading the way for the blue and orange was Abby Foust, racking up five aces on 14/18 serving that led to 12 points for the visitors. Jaden Ivy notched three aces on 9/14 serving for eight points. Samantha Comer was a perfect 16/16 on her serves, scoring nine points and providing an ace. Kate Schieber picked up the final ace on 17/18 serving en route to 12 points. Nicole Thomas finished the match at 7/10 for three points and Kayla Hardy earned a point for the Tigers with a 4/7 serving performance.
As always, the Galion front was busy at the net, recording 47 team kills. Comer finished with 17 kills while Gillian Miller turned in 12. Ivy recorded 10 kills and Gracie Groves rounded out the Tigers attack with eight. Hardy was the primary ball handler for the visitors, going 73/77 en route to earning 36 of the team’s 41 assists. Comer and Foust picked up two assists each while Thomas chimed in with an assist of her own. As a team, Galion finished at 90/95 handling with the aforementioned 41 assists.
Defensively for Galion, the Lady Tigers wrapped the contest at 47/53 on service reception, racked up eight total blocks and would dig out 50 River Valley kill attempts. Comer contributed six of those blocks while teammates Brooklyn Cosey, Miller and Groves chipped in one block apiece. Thomas had the most digs for Galion with 14 while Ivy turned in 10. Schieber and Foust recorded seven apiece while Hardy and Comer stayed busy, posting six digs each.
MOAC play is set to continue for the Galion Lady Tigers as they play host to the Harding Prexies on Thursday, August 30.
Mohawk 3, Galion 1
SYCAMORE — Following an impressive win last week against league rival, the Pleasant Lady Spartans, Galion took to the road to face the Mohawk Lady Warriors of the Northern-10 Athletic Conference.
Unfortunately, the trip would not be kind to the blue and orange as they suffered defeat in four sets; 19-25, 25-20, 20-25, 12-25.
The Mohawk offense got the best of the Galion defense as the Tigers managed just 22 digs on the night to go along with only three blocks. On serve reception, the visiting Tigers finished at 70/80, leading to 10 Warriors’ aces.
Comer finished the contest with six digs and a block to lead the Galion defense. Hardy recorded four digs and a block while Ivy, Schieber, Foust and Thomas all dug out three Mohawk attack attempts apiece. Groves led the block party for the Tigers with two and Cosey rounded out the blocking stats with one.
Offensively, the Lady Tigers appeared to have an “off-night”, going 108/138 on attack attempts that led to 40 kills. Hardy was once again the primary setter, finishing the match at 115/119 with 32 assists. The team wrapped the evening at 134/143 handling with Groves and Ivy picking up the other two assists as Galion had 34 as a team. On the attack, it was Comer leading the kill category with 19. Ivy and Groves had seven kills apiece, Cosey had four, Miller added two and Hardy rounded out the attack with one kill.
Serving statistics for the Tigers on Monday were: Team- 66/70, 6 aces; Ivy- 17/17, 3 aces; Hardy- 9/10, 2 aces; Schieber- 9/9, ace; Thomas- 13/14; Foust- 8/9 and Groves- 2/2.
