Galion’s boys continue aquatic dominance at Ontario Invite

ONTARIO — The swim teams from Galion High School were at the Ontario Invitational on Saturday, January 27 to compete against a crowded field for local honors.

Galion’s boys squad would swim away with the title, defeating the runner-up and hosting Ontario Warriors; 303-203. Rounding out the field on the boys side were: 3. Willard- 168; 4. Shelby- 104; 5. Harding- 94; 6. Tiffin Columbian- 90; 7. Calvert- 64; 8. St. Peter’s- 43; 9. Crestview- 29; 10. Mansfield Senior- 26; 11. Norwalk- 24 and 12. CRESTLINE- 1.

The Tigers would sweep the relay events on the day and have three individual champions crowned as well.

In the 200-yard medley relay, the foursome of Caleb Strack, Luke Eisnaugle, Clay Karnes and Sam Rigdon kickstarted the day with a win over the team from Willard in a time of 1:46.74. Ben Alstadt would join Eisnaugle, Karnes and Rigdon to earn first over in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:35.15 to outlast hosting Ontario. In the final event of the day, the 400-free relay, Weston Rose, Alstadt, Strack and Alec Dicus swam to a season-best time of 3:29.61 to capture the crown over Ontario yet again.

Rigdon, Dicus and Strack were the individual event winners on the day for the Tigers. Rigdon earned his first place finish over teammate Eisnaugle (2:19.34) in the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:18.14. Dicus also defeated a teammate (Braxton Tate) to take first overall in the 500-free in 5:15.99. Strack outswam Kenton Cordrey (Ontario) in the 100-yard backstroke for the title, finishing the race in 57.57.

Other placements and for the Galion boys were: Dicus- 2nd, 200-free; Karnes- 3rd, 200-free and 2nd, 100-yard butterfly; Rose- 4th, 200-free and 4th, 100-free; Strack- 2nd, 50-free; Alstadt- 3rd, 50-free and 4th, 100-back; Wyatt Enders- 21st, 50-free and 17th, 100-back; Rigdon- 2nd, 100-free; Issac Niedermier- 8th, 100-free; Chris Amick- 20th, 100-free and 16th, 100-breaststroke; Tate- 2nd, 500-free and 7th, 100-breast; Eisnaugle- 3rd, 100-yard breast.

Crestline’s boys placements on Saturday were: Keagen Sqrow- 28th, 50-free and 23rd, 100-free; Jaden Stewart- 32nd, 50-free; Logan Parrella- 35th, 50-free; Alec Sipes- 25th, 100-free and 12th, 100-breast; Stewart, Parrella, Sipes and Sqrow- 10th, 200-free relay and 10th, 400-free relay.

Over on the girls side of the invite, it was the hosting Lady Warriors winning the title by defeating Norwalk; 277-229. Rounding out the girls field were: 3. Shelby- 192; 4. GALION- 125; 5. Calvert- 120; 6. Tiffin Columbian- 84; 7. Harding- 64; 8. Willard- 35; 9. Mansfield Senior- 21 and 10. CRESTLINE- 5.

Senior Allison DeNero would earn the highest placing finish on the day for the Galion Lady Tigers, earning the runner-up spot in the 200-IM by finishing in a time of 2:32.60. Freshman Amy Evans of Ontario won the event in 2:27.08.

Relay placements for the Galion girls on the day were: Ashleigh Wright, Sari Conner, DeNero and Elise Barnhart- 6th, 200-medley; Barnhart, Bri Streib, Conner and DeNero- 3rd, 200-free; Danielle Schneider, Streib, Katlyn Kuehlman and Wright- 8th, 400-free.

Other placements for the Lady Tigers were: Conner- 6th, 200-free and 5th, 100-free; Schneider- 11th, 200-free and 8th, 500-free; Barnhart- 6th, 50-free and 7th, 100-free; Streib- 14th, 50-free and 15th, 100-free; Kennedy Gifford- 29th, 50-free; DeNero- 4th, 100-free; Wright- 4th, 500-free and 8th, 100-back; Kuehlman- 12th, 100-breast.

Lady Bulldogs placements were: Kinsey Kenison- 10th, 50-free and 11th, 100-back; Caitlin Harley- 24th, 50-free and 32nd, 100-free; Mariah Mosier- 34th, 50-free; Michaela Jeffrey- 14th, 100-free and 14th, 100-breast; Alex Miller- 15th, 100-back; Jeffrey, Miller, Harley and Kenison- 8th, 200-free relay and 9th, 400-free relay.

Galion will be at Ashland University for a dual against the Ashland Arrows on Tuesday, February 6. This will be the final tune-up for the Tigers before the sectional meet on Saturday, February 10 at Mansfield Malabar. Crestline will be in action in Ontario again, this time for a tri-meet, on Tuesday, January 30.
