Prep golf: Eagles start hot, Tigers end week well

The opening week of the 2015 prep golf season witnessed a hot start for the Colonel Crawford boys team and Galion rebounded from a rough first match to end its week on a high note.

Galion 186, Colonel Crawford 190

Colonel Crawford’s Noah Trease outdueled Galion’s Jack McElligott to win the match medal, but it was McElligott’s Tigers that ended up winning the match on Thursday at the Galion Country Club. The Tigers prevailed by four strokes over the Eagles, 186-190.

It was Colonel Crawford’s first loss of the season in dual matches. The Eagles are 5-1.

Trease shot 40 to finish three strokes ahead of McElligott in a match played on the back nine at the Galion Country Club. Trease fired an eagle on number 12 and made par on 10, 11 and 13.

McElligott compiled his round of 43 thanks to a birdie on number 13 and pars on 10 and 15. The freshman has emerged as Galion’s top player early in the 2015 season.

Brevin Owens made par on number 13 and finished with a round of 46 to help the Galion effort. Nick Kruger shot 48 and Kaleb Harsh fired a 49. Colten Skaggs and Mitchell Dyer each recorded a round of 52.

For the Eagles, Austin Strouse shot 49 and Nick Gremling finished the day at 50. Isaak Sulser and Jake Roesch each shot 51. Eli Shultz carded a 59.

Galion junior varsity player Jude Kern recorded a hole-in-one on the 13th hole and finished at 53 for the day. Kern is a junior at GHS.

Following are the Eagles’ junior varsity scores from Thursday’s match: Devin Clayton, 53; Tyson Russell, 54; Makalah Trubee, 58.

Colonel Crawford 190, Wynford 217

Isaak Sulser and Noah Trease each shot 45 to lead Colonel Crawford to a 27-stroke victory over Wynford on Wednesday at Valley View Golf Course near Galion. Eagles head coach Brett Kaple said the match was a non-league event for both Northern 10 Athletic Conference schools.

Trease fired a birdie on the fifth hole at Valley View and made par on numbers 7 and 8. Susler shot even-par on number 3 and number 6.

Nick Gremling finished with a round of 48, making par on number 8. Jake Rahm carded a 52 and Jake Roesch ended his day at 55. Eli Shultz shot 56 for the Eagles.

McKenton Johnson led Wynford with a round of 50. He shot par on number 2 at Valley View.

Kyle Koons finished with a score of 53. Logan Sand and Mitchell Zaebst each shot 57. Jack Reed carded a 62.

Following are the scores for Colonel Crawford’s junior varsity players: Austin Strouse, 53; Devin Clayton, 61; Tyson Russell, 65; and Makalah Trubee, 68.

Galion 5th at MOAC

Buckeye Valley captured first place at the Mid Ohio Athletic Conference Coaches Golf Tournament played Tuesday at Oakhaven Golf Club near Delaware.

The Barons shot 325 to win the Red Division team title. River Valley was four shots behind at 329. Pleasant placed third with a round of 341.

Jonathan Alder finished fourth with a combined score of 364. Galion placed fifth with a round of 373. Marion Harding shot 395 and North Union finished at 484.

“We improved since our last tournament,” said Galion head coach Bryce Lehman. “Not as many mental mistakes this time out. We still need to play smarter golf, but I am pleased by today’s effort.”

Mitchell Dyer was the Tigers’ top player at the MOAC event, finishing with a round of 90. Jack McElligott shot 91. Brevin Owens carded a 94. Nick Kruger finished with a score of 98. Kaleb Harsh shot 100 and Colten Skaggs finished with a round of 106.

Colonel Crawford 186, Plymouth 200

The Eagles defeated Plymouth by 14 strokes on Tuesday at Woody Ridge Golf Course near Shelby. Colonel Crawford golfers shot a combined 186 while their Big Red counterparts finished at 200.

Eagles senior Isaak Sulser claimed the match medal after shooting a round of 43. Teammate Nick Gremling finished a shot off the lead at 44. Plymouth’s Dylan Patton shot 45 to finish third in the medal race.

Sulser shot par on three holes. Gremling was even par on four holes. Patton shot par on number 1 to start his day.

Jacob Roesch turned in the third best score for the Eagles, carding a 49. Eli Schultz finished at 50. Jake Rehm shot 52 and Devin Clayton finished at 59.

Jake Adams finished with a round of 47 for the Big Red. Aaron Lyons shot 53. Noah Stima carded a 55. Noah Porter shot 57. Nate Sexton finished at 72.

Following are the Colonel Crawford junior varsity scores from Tuesday’s match: Tyson Russell, 50; Austin Strouse, 55; Makalah Trubee, 56.
