Galion swimmers kickoff season with a split

GALION — Swimming is back as the Galion Tigers swim team welcomed the Ontario Warriors to the Galion YMCA on Tuesday, November 28 to compete in Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference action.

On the afternoon, the Tigers would earn a split with the visiting Warriors as the Galion boys were victorious; 73-21. The Lady Tigers fell to the Lady Warriors; 26-68. With that victory, the boys have now won 21 consecutive dual meets.

The Galion boys squad would start off their day with a victory by the 200-yard medley relay team of Caleb Strack, Luke Eisnaugle, Clay Karnes and Sam Rigdon. The Tigers foursome swam their way to victory in 1:49.34. Strack, Rigdon and Karnes were joined by Ben Alstadt in their victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:37.35). Galion would make it a clean sweep in the boys relay events with the group of Weston Rose, Alec Dicus, Alstadt and Eisnaugle claiming the vicotry in the 400-free relay with a time of 3:45.09.

Other relay results on the boys side were: Wyatt Enders, Braxton Tate, Chris Amick and Isaac Niedermier- 3rd in the 200-medley; Dicus, Niedermier, Tate and Rose- 2nd in the 200-free; Niedermier, Amick, Enders and Tate- 3rd in the 400-free.

In the individual events, Sam Rigdon was a double winner on the day for head coach Ted Temple’s Galion squad. Rigdon was the top finisher in the 200-yard individual medley (2:16.63) and the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.65).

Karnes, Strack, Dicus and Eisnaugle would also prevail in their respective individual events.

Karnes won the 200-free with a time of 2:01.09 and Strack earned first in the 100-free in a time of 54.87. Dicus finished the 500-free in a time of 5:21.43 to pick up the win and Eisnaugle took first in the 100-breaststroke (1:12.56).

Other placements on the day for Galion were: Rose- 200-free, 2nd and 100-free, 2nd; Eisnaugle- 200-IM, 2nd; Alstadt- 50-free, 2nd and 100-backstroke, 3rd; Niedermier- 50-free, 3rd; Dicus- 100-fly, 2nd; Karnes- 500-free, 2nd; Strack- 100-back, 2nd and Tate- 100-breast, 2nd.

The Galion Lady Tigers would win just one event for the meet against a tough Ontario squad. Allison DeNero swam the 200-IM in a time of 2:34.73 to capture the victory for the hosting Galion girls.

To go along with DeNero’s individual win, she was joined by teammates Ashleigh Wright, Sari Conner and Elise Barnhart in the runner-up foursome in the opening event, the 200-medley relay. DeNero, Barnhart and Conner would then be joined by Danielle Schneider in the 400-free relay to earn second.

Conner, DeNero and Schneider would also go on to runner-up finishes in their respective individual events on the afternoon.

Conner netted a pair of second place finishes in the 200-free and the 100-breast. DeNero earned second in the 100-fly and Schneider was the runner-up in the 500-free. Other placements for the Lady Tigers against Ontario were: 200-free relay of Wright, Harmony Lohr, Katlyn Kuehlman and Allison Bauer, 4th; 400-free relay of Schneider, Kuehlman, Lohr and Wright, 3rd; Barnhart- 3rd in the 50-free and 100-free; Kuehlman- 4th, 200-free; Lohr- 4th in the 100-free and 100-back; Wright- 3rd, 100-back; Schneider- 4th, 50-free and Bauer- 4th, 500-free.

The Tigers will head to Friendly House to meet up with the Lexington swimmers on Thursday, November 30 before they host the Colonel Crawford Eagles next Wednesday, December 6.
