New coach Scott Armrose gets first win

GALION — On Friday night, under their home lights, the Northmor Golden Knights football team played host to the Crestview Cougars in the 2017 season opener. This contest also marked the first game under new head coach Scott Armrose.

Northmor didn’t win a game until week 10 last season but will start this year’s campaign at 1-0 after defeating the visiting Cougars; 21-14.

Making sure the Knights started on the right track, Demetrius ‘Meechie’ Johnson contributed to 18 of the 21 points scored by the home team.

Meechie, the quarterback for the Northmor squad, ran the ball a total of 19 times on Friday, netting 257 yards and two touchdowns. Johnson got the scoring started for the game in the second quarter when he marched off an 85-yard touchdown on the ground. Add the extra point by Kyle Kegley and the Golden Knights led 7-0.

Crestview would get on the board later in the second quarter with a 31-yard touchdown strike through the air to tie the contest at seven points apiece. Johnson was not doing tearing up the field just yet as he ran in for another score in the second, this time from 58-yards out. Another PAT from the foot of Kegley and Northmor went into the intermission up by a tally of 14-7.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Cougars would strike first in the fourth on a 4-yard touchdown run by their quarterback and with the extra point, the score was knotted up at 14 apiece. With just 2:45 remaining in regulation, Crestview found themselves with the ball, looking to eat up the clock and hopefully avoid overtime. Meechie, however, had other plans as he intercepted the football and ran it in for his third overall touchdown of the game. Kegley added the extra point and Northmor was back on top at 21-14, which is where the game would finish.

Northmor will look to carry the momentum from the big, season opening victory next Friday when they hit the road to take on the Warriors from Worthington Christian.
