BELLVILLE — The Galion Tigers boys golf squad finished up their first week of competition on Thursday at Deer Ridge while participating in the Colt Classic, hosted by Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference rival Clear Fork.

After finishing in first overall at the Buckeye Central Invitational on Tuesday and winning their own Galion Invitational on Wednesday, the Tigers took fourth overall in the 10-team field at the Colt Classic.

Wooster won the invite with a score of 320, four strokes ahead of second place Lexington (324). Rounding out the scoring in the field were: 3. Ontario- 330; 4. GALION- 336; 5. West Holmes- 354; 6. Clear Fork- 359; 7. Madison- 384; 8. Highland- 396; 9. Marion Harding- 410 and 10. Mansfield Senior- 443.

“Today was a better test to see where we stacked up against some better schools,” says Galion coach Bryce Lehman. “I am pleased with the 4th place finish because I know we didn’t play as well as we are capable of playing and to finish 16 and 12 strokes behind Division I powers Wooster and Lexington, respectively, tells me that we can compete with bigger schools if we remain focused.”

Note: During the Galion Invitational and the Colt Classic, the Tigers and the Colts began their 2017 MOAC seasons.

Wednesday at Sycamore Creek, Galion defeated Clear Fork; 164-176. Medalist for the match-up was Matthew McMullen, shooting a nine-hole 38. Spencer Keller shot a 40, Jack McElligott a 42 and Mitch Dyer a 44. Kaleb Harsh and Matt Kingseed both had their scores of 51 dropped.

Thursday at Deer Creek, Galion was once again victorious over the Colts; 169-178. McElligott and McMullen were co-medalist at 41. Keller finished with a 42 and Dyer with a 45. Kingseed’s 47 and Harsh’s 51 were dropped in the nine-hole scoring setup.

The Tigers are now 2-0 this season in the MOAC.
