NEWARK — The Galion Graders snapped their three-game losing skid on Sunday at Don Edwards Stadium in Newark when they defeated the Licking County Settlers by a final of 3-2.

With the victory, Galion has matched their win total from last season and sit at 12-13 on the season. Licking County drops to 10-14 with the defeat.

Local guy (Mansfield), Brody Basilone was the starting pitcher for the Graders and went seven strong innings en route to earning the win. Basilone scattered just three hits, did not allow a run, walked two and struck out five Settlers’ batters. Sam Stewart came on to work the eighth inning, allowing an unearned run and walking one. Brock Balderson continued his dominance at the tail-end of the bullpen, pitching the ninth and allowing one hit and an unearned run while walking one and fanning two to pick up the save.

Galion needed just five hits to score their three runs and stranded just two runners on base. Licking County waited until the eighth and ninth innings to score their two runs, accumulated just four hits and stranded nine. Galion scored all three of their runs in the top of the second inning. The Graders had three errors in the field for the contest.

Zach Mottice belted Galion’s only extra-base hit, a double and drove in three runs for the game. Joe Crank and Jarett Smetana had a single and a run scored apiece while Brandt Nowaskie and Parke Phillips had the Graders’ other two hits, both singles. Jake Hoover scored the other run on the day for the visitors.
