Graders earn 4th of July victory

GALION — The Galion Graders celebrated Independence Day with a victory on their home field against the Lorain County Ironmen, 7-2.

Brody Basilone started the day on the mound for the Graders and picked up the win, going six innings and allowing eight hits and two runs (one earned). Basilone walked two hitters and struck out seven in the winning performance. Dustin Baird came on in relief and went 1.2 innings and gave up just two walks. The final 1.1 innings of the ballgame were worked by Brock Balderson. Balderson allowed just one hit and fanned an Ironmen batter in that time.

Galion scored their seven runs on seven hits, committed two errors in the field and stranded nine total baserunners. Lorain County plated two on nine hits while also committing two errors in the field and leaving nine on base.

Sam Stewart, relief pitcher turned infielder, had a two-hit day at the plate for the Graders. Stewart knocked a single and a solo home run, scored twice and had an RBI. Parke Phillips finished the contest with a double, a run scored and a run driven in. Austin Hathaway and Brady Hettinger also belted doubles on Tuesday. Hathaway notched two runs batted in and Hettinger scored a run. Jarett Smetana and Joe Crank each recorded singles with Smetana scoring twice on the evening. Grant Fuller swiped three bases in the game and finished with an RBI, Zach Mottice drove in a run and Braxton Giavedoni scored once to round out the Graders offense against Lorain County.
