Tigers down Buckeye Valley in nine innings

DELAWARE — It took nine innings, but Galion opened Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference play Wednesday with a 5-4 victory, on the road, vs. Buckeye Valley.

The scoring started early for both teams as the Tigers notched three runs in the top half of the first and the Barons getting one back in the bottom part of the frame. From there, the scoring dropped off until Galion plated one in the top of the fourth. They would not score again until the top of the ninth, which proved to be the winning run. Buckeye Valley scored once in the home half of the fifth and two in the sixth.

Mac Spears went six innings for Galion, allowing five hits and four earned runs. Spears struck out five and walked four. Garrett Kuns would come on in relief in the seventh and would pitch the remained of the game to pick up the win. Kuns scattered two hits, walked three and fanned two.

Spears and Kuns would also have solid days at the plate. Spears went three four four and had the teams only extra base hit, a double. Kuns was two for five with two singles. Ryan Talbott, Mitch Dyer, and Will Donahue also had a pair of singles on the day. Devin Baughn and Ethan Pigg recorded the other hits for Galion.

The Tigers scattered 13 hits and no errors. The Barons had seven hits and no errors.

With the victory, Galion improves to 2-0 overall on the season and 1-0 in the MOAC Red.

Up next for Galion is another MOAC match-up on Friday March 31 at River Valley. The Tigers will turn around and play a doubleheader at Willard on Saturday April 1. On Monday April 3, Galion will play their home opener and host MOAC foe Marion Harding
