COLUMBUS — The 80th Annual State Wrestling Individual Tournament has now come and gone. Nine area wrestlers started the trek and only Northmor’s Conan Becker remained on Saturday, the third and final day.

Becker was victorious in his first two matches before being sent to the consolation bracket by eventual runner-up in the 138-pound weight class, Noah Mattin of Archibold. Once in the lower bracket, Becker would square off against Brian Persinger of Wooster Triway.

Becker would lose his second match in a row to Persinger, who picked up his third straight victory respectively, by a 6-4 sudden victory. With the loss, Conan was sent to the fifth place match, where he would be paired against Jared Ford of Troy Christian. Ford would defeat Becker by a 9-3 decision to earn fifth place and Becker the sixth overall finish in the weight class.

The 138-pound class was won by Brady Barnett of Milan Edison. Mattin finished as the runner-up, Gavin Stika of Creston Norwayne finished in third place and Persinger earned fourth. JD McNett of Tontogany Ostego finished seventh and Chase Sumner of Ada rounded out the weight class’ placers in eighth.

Congratulations to Conan, who is just a junior, on a fantastic season and run at the state championships!
