Tigers shine at Columbus swim invite

COLUMBUS — While some of the Galion Tigers’ swim team members were busy competing in the Colonel Crawford Relays last Saturday, the others were at the McCorkle Natatorium on the campus of the Ohio State University for the Ned Reeb Memorial High School Invitational

In the 200-yard medley relay, the squad of Bri Wallis, Sari Conner, Allison DeNero and Elise Barnhart swam to their best time of the season, 2:07.20, and grabbed 10th in the event. The same group of girls also were in the water for the 200-yard freestyle relay. Again, they put up a season best time and finished 9th in 1:53.25.

Individually, DeNero won the 50-yard freestyle in 26.63. Conner finished in 11th in 27.69 and Wallis in 14th also with a time of 27.69. DeNero was Galion’s highest finisher in the 100-yard freestyle, in 10th place in 59.79. Wallis was 14th in 1:00.47 and Conner 21st in 1:01.46.

The dominant boys relay team of Caleb Strack, Sam Rigdon, Clay Karnes and Eli Skaggs won the 200-yard medley relay in a season-best time of 1:46.89. The second relay squad — Landon Rose, Luke Eisnaugle, Alec Dicus and Lucas Conner — finished 16th in 1:57.05. Strack, Karnes, Rigdon and Skaggs would swim to another season best in the 200-yard freestyle relay at 1:35.43, good for second place The second Galion relay team was sixth in 1:40.97.

Individually for the boys, Skaggs won the 50-yard freestyle in 22.22 and the 100-yard freestyle in 49.69. Karnes would swim to two personal best times for the season. He was third in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:57.15 and second in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:15.27. Rigdon was firth the 50-yard freestyle in 23.37 and fifth in the 100-yard freestyle in 52.86. Dicus was third in the 500-yard freestyle in a PR of 5:19.27. Strack was thrd in the 100-yard backstroke event, in 1:00.57.
