Galion struggles in final football tuneup

GALION — Galion’s final tuneup prior to this week’s football season opener showed the Tigers need a little work before taking on Bucyrus Friday.

They were on the field at Unckrich Stadium playing host to the Shelby Whippets last Friday in their annual Jamboree game. All proceeds from the game will benefit the Galion football team

Galion’s varsity, junior varsity and freshman units all took part.

In the varsity competition (two 12-minute quarter), Shelby got off to a quick start and never looked back. The Whippets scored two quick touchdowns within six minutes en route to a 13-0 lead at the end of one period. Galion’s offense was unable to move the ball, but after giving up those two quick scores, Galion’s defense stiffened a bit.

But Galion wasn’t able to get on track in the second quarter either as Shelby upped it’s lead to 33-0.

Galion never seemed to be able to find a rhythm on offense, and the defense struggled as well. Galion did force one turnover on a fumble in the second period, but whatever momentum they may have picked up was lost immediately when the Tigers gave the ball right back on a turnover.
