MOUNT GILEAD — The Galion’s boys golf team teed off last week in the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference Invitational at Pine Lakes Golf Club. They did well, placing second overall in the Red Division with a combined score of 348, just behind Marion Pleasant, which turned in a 339. Rounding out the remainder of the division were River Valley shooting a 367, Marion Harding with a 372 and North Union with a total team score of 400.

Galion golf coach Bryce Lehman sent six golfers out for the invitational Friday at the Par 72 course in Mount Gilead. Sophomore Jack McElligott lead the way for the Tigers, shooting a team best 80. Junior Mitch Dyer found was second on the squad with an 87. The other contributors to the team’s score of 348 were senior Brevin Owens with an 89 and sophomore Matt Kingseed shooting a 92. The other scores were senior Nick Kruger (95) and sophomore Kaleb Harsh (102).

“I think that we played pretty well considering last year we placed dead last in the conference invitational while shooting a 373.” Lehman said. “I am very happy with the improvement that the boys have shown already. They are beginning to realize their full potential.”

In the Blue Division, Mount Gilead was tops with a score of 355; followed by Fredericktown, 358; Cardington, 361; Highland, 377; Centerburg, 392; and Northmor, 488.

Cardington’s Austin Yake was the medalist with a 2-over par 73.

The Tigers will look for more improvement this week. On Wednesday they host the Galion Invitational at Sycamore Creek, formerly Galion Country Club. Other participants include: Bucyrus, Crestline, Mansfield Senior, Madison, Clear Fork and Fostoria. Action starts at 9 a.m.

On Thursday, Galion takes part in the Colt Classic at Deer Ridge Golf Club in Bellville.
