Pizza is popular with the eaters in my house, so any time I can give them a meal that tastes like pizza, they are a happy bunch. This sandwich is a giant, overstuffed meal in one sort of dish.

When this sandwich comes out of the oven, the exclamations of “oh” and “ah” will be heard all around the kitchen.

It’s an easy to prepare dish that can be modified to please the tastes of your family. Simply use your preferred pizza toppings in place of the ingredients listed in this recipe. My family is a meat lover’s pizza eating one, so the more meat they can squeeze into the sandwich, the happier they are.

Pizza Lovers Delight

1 loaf French bread

1 Egg

1 c. diced Ham

1 c. diced Bacon (cooked)

½ c. diced Pepperoni

½ c. chopped Mushrooms

½ c. diced Onions

½ c. shredded Mozzarella Cheese

1 c. Pizza Sauce

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. In a medium bowl, beat the egg. Add the meats, mushrooms, onions, and cheese to the bowl. Stir until all ingredients are coated with the egg. Slice the loaf of bread in half lengthwise. Spray a 9x13 baking dish lightly with cooking oil. Place the loaf of bread on the baking dish and press open. Spoon the filling into the loaf. Cover with aluminum foil. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for 5 minutes. Cut loaf into three pieces to serve. Place pizza sauce in microwavable bowl. Heat for 1-2 minutes and serve as dipping sauce beside sandwiches.

Make it a Meal: Serve with a salad or chips. This sandwich tastes delicious with a bowl of soup.

Variations: Add some diced olives or green peppers to the meat mixture. Serve with ranch dressing for a dipping sauce. Exchange the pepperoni for cooked ground sausage.

Depending on how strong your onions are, or how much you like onions, you may cook them in a skillet until just softened or translucent prior to mixing them into the sandwich stuffing.

For added pizza flavor, you could sprinkle some extra shredded mozzarella cheese over the top of the sandwich during the last five minutes of baking.

This hearty sandwich will be a hit with the meat lover’s pizza eaters in your family. I can tell you it’s a favorite for the crowd at my house. If you have children or people with smaller appetites, this filling works well stuffed into hot dog buns.

Reader Feedback: Readers commented that “nana pudding” was one of their childhood favorites. They were pleased to have a version they could make and relive some good memories.
