LIMA — The trial date for a man accused of killing a man during a robbery has been pushed back to Dec. 16.
Valdis Stapleton Jr., 21, waived his right to a speedy trial Monday to give his attorney more time to prepare a defense. Stapleton is charged with aggravated murder, two counts of felonious assault, and aggravated burglary.
He is charged in the shooting death of 24-year-old Carlton “C.J.” Martin on June 17. The shooting inside a home at 844 Oak St. also wounded Eric Irons. The two and others were inside a house preparing to celebrate the release of Irons’ stepbrother from prison when two gunmen approached the house.
One gunman entered the home. Martin and Irons tried to hide in the house but were unable to escape the flurry of bullets.
Stapleton also has Nov. 3 and Dec. 1 pretrial hearings scheduled.
