BUCYRUS — The major focus at the beginning of each Bucyrus school board meeting has become student presentations and commendations. The most recent regular meeting of the board was no exception Oct. 27.
The first presentation was from Bucyrus Elks Lodge 156. The local organization received a $2,000 Beacon Grant from its national foundation and presented the check to the Bucyrus Backpack Program.
“Bucyrus Elks Lodge 156 has been a great partner in helping this program feed Bucyrus kids,” said Lorie Pennington, Bucyrus Backpack Program Board President. “We are grateful for their continued support and assistance in helping us fulfill our mission.”
The second presentation involved seven students from the Bucyrus Secondary School, who along with Principal Dr. Mark Burke, shared information with the board about the newly-launched Crawford County Youth Leadership Council. Students involved in the program include: Owen Browning, Loarel Mollenkopf, Alexandria Rule, Jonathon Shultz, Kade Slagle, Brooklyn Spears and Julia VanVoorhis.
“This is an exciting new leadership program involving all six Crawford County school districts,” said Burke. “The basis for the council revolves around several leadership books, and identifying issues in our community and developing action plans to help bring about meaningful change in Crawford County.”
Eight students from the Bucyrus Elementary School and the secondary school received commendations for having their artwork selected for display in the hallway of the Lincoln Administrative Center. Students receiving commendations included: Bailey Howell, Wayla Sutton, Evelyn Skidmore, and Lydia Stahl (Bucyrus Elementary School); Tyler Rittenhour, Kelsey Carver, Victoria Adams, and Emmelia Bloomfield (Bucyrus Secondary School).
“We have an incredible visual arts department in both buildings, and it’s always a pleasure to walk through the hallway and enjoy the students’ artwork,” said Kevin Kimmel, Bucyrus Superintendent. “I want to congratulate each of these students on a job well done!”
The board moved to the business portion of its meeting which included acceptance of Mini-Grants for teachers from the Bucyrus Educational Foundation.
