A small pond was recently dug up at Fairview Cemetery. It is located at the front of the property, near the southern entrance. It has a kidney shape and measures 21 feet long, 10.5 feet wide and two feet deep. The concrete base is mostly intact, except for where some tree roots have cracked it. A ceramic pipe sticks out of the center, so it could have been a fountain.

Cemetery Manager Shane Shipley said he was told about the pond by the former manager, Ira Johnson, when he started working there nine years ago. It was described to him as a “frog pond.” Recently Shipley decided to dig it up and take a look for himself.

No employees or members of the Cemetery Board have any further information about the pond. They are requesting anyone with details or old photos of the pond to call the cemetery office at 419-468-5390 or send a message through the website, www.fairviewcemeterygalion.org.
