The Colonel Crawford Board of Education held a special meeting on July 14 to approve the abatement and demolition packages for the former elementary and middle school buildings.
The projects will be advertised for bid later this month, and at the August board meeting contracts will be awarded. The abatement and demolition work will last from September through December.
Superintendent Todd Martin reported the the demolition portion was estimated at $273,935 for all three buildings, which is under the project budget. The abatement work, originally budgeted at $1.5 million, was recently estimated at just over $1 million (the state shares the cost).
Board member Tim Ley asked if prospective bidders will be able to go through the buildings. Martin said that a tour of all the buildings will be offered on July 28.
The partial demolition of the high school is a separate project, to be bid out in November. Demolition will not begin until summer of 2015 and will include the entire west side of the building, which houses classrooms and administrative offices. The gymnasium, pool and classrooms on the east side will remain.
The Board also approved a change order of $95,570, to pay Gandee & Associates for project administration services and inspections. The company is overseeing the demo process.
All of this is part of the district’s $6.4 million project (mostly funded by the state) to construct a high school wing on the K-8 building.
