Sixty-five were in attendance at the 64th annual meeting of former Tiro students and alumni on Saturday, June 21 at the Tiro Firehouse. Attendees came from Florida, Texas, Arizona and California to enjoy the evening with a meal served by Just Jokin of Crestline. Donald Bevier, class of 1942, traveled the furthest from Sacramento, California.
Many good memories were shared. School yearbooks and many photos were on display for study and enjoyment by all.
Sixteen members who died in the past year were recognized and honored in a brief ceremony.
Joyce VonStein (class of 1958) was recognized for her outstanding service as secretary for the past 10 years. She provided a lot of “extras” to help make the annual meetings more meaningful.
Based on the recent recovery of a copy of the groups’ original constitution, it was decided to make some changes. The official name of the organization will now be the Tiro Student Association. Any person who attended Tiro School is welcome and encouraged to participate in all activities and meetings. This includes all Tiro Graduates and students who attended Tiro through 1960 and any person attending Tiro school after 1960 as an elementary or junior high school student in the Buckeye Central District. Also, anyone else who has a genuine interest in Tiro school history is also welcome. It is hoped that by expanding the membership base, additional participation will help continue to make future meetings meaningful.
Information was shared on the upcoming opening of the Tiro Bank Cornerstone, the need for photos showing Tiro’s history and the use of special building stones from the demolished Tiro school.
Next year’s meeting will be held on the third Saturday of June at the Tiro Firehouse.
A 50/50 drawing was won by Penny “Hazel” Bean.
