Ashland University Coburn Gallery announces Student Art Exhibition Staff report winners

The award winners have been announced for the Ashland University 2016 Juried Student Art Exhibition that will run through April 1 in the University’s Coburn Gallery.

This year’s exhibition offered $1,100 in awards to student artists, including Best in Show, Bernini Award, Dean’s Award, People’s Choice Award and awards in each of the five art areas: painting, printmaking, sculpture, digital art and design, drawing and ceramics.

The awards, which were announced at the opening reception of the exhibition on March 17, were:

— Best in Show Award, presented to Abigail Nye of Utica, Ohio, for her scratch board drawing titled “The Waterhouse Mermaid.” The $250 award was sponsored by the Coburn Gallery.

— The Bernini Award, presented to Kiana Ziegler of Ashland, Ohio, for her mixed media work titled “Amor.” The $100 award was sponsored and selected by Dr. Wendy and Scott Schaller.

— The College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Award, presented to Danielle Smith of Warren, Pa., for her wire sculpture titled “Strong Elegance.” The $200 award was sponsored and selected by Dr. Dawn Weber, Ashland University’s Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences.

Other art area awards sponsored by the Coburn Art Gallery included:

— Sculpture Award – $100 award to Kara Mewhinney of Medina, Ohio, for the steel and yarn sculpture titled “TWISTER.”

— Printmaking Award – $100 award to Dana Reed of Plymouth, Ohio, for her linoleum print titled “Dispositioni.”

— Digital and Design Award – $100 award to Kaylin Henry of Circleville, Ohio, for her digital animation titled “Something Grabbed Ahold of my Hand.”

— Painting Award – $100 award to Hannah Thome of Amherst, Ohio, for her mixed media painting titled “Exhaustion.”

— Ceramics Award – $100 award to Nataleigh Everett of Ashland, Ohio, for her stoneware titled “Flightless Bird.”

— Drawing Award – $100 award to Caitlin Rayburn of Ontario, Ohio, for her charcoal drawing titled

“Waiting to be Drawn Like One of Your French Girls.”

— People’s Choice Award – a gift card was presented to Ashley Herman of North Royalton, Ohio, for her ceramic sculpture titled “Le Fleur.” The People’s Choice Award, which was sponsored by Gallery Director Cynthia Petry, was selected by the Coburn Gallery patrons during the opening reception on Thursday, March 17.

— Alumni “Wink” Award – a gift card was presented to Caitlin Rayburn of Ontario, Ohio, for the pen drawing titled “Don’t Drink and Draw.” The Alumni Award is selected and sponsored by 2012 alumnus Jennifer Winkler.

The outside juror for exhibition was Clare Murray Adams, who accepted 68 entries of the 101 art entries submitted. Adams, who was born in Canton, Ohio, received a BFA from Kent State University and an MFA from Vermont College. She is a retired professor of Art and former chair of the Visual Art Department at Malone University in Canton, Ohio. She now lives in rural Southington, Ohio, where she maintains an active studio practice.
