Area missionary still missing

Police in Georgia are still looking for a Morrow County native who was a long-time missionary in Hong Kong.

Janet Sue Miller, 78, who is now living in Brookhaven, Ga., but grew up five miles south of Galion, went missing after a Christmas Eve service at her Georgia church and hasn’t been found.

Calls to the local police department weren’t returned Monday, but Brookhaven Post editor Trey Benton, who has actively covered the search said the community has rallied around the search for Miller.

“Police have searched the area for her with no luck,” Benton said Monday. “Signs have been posted throughout the area. The city is continuing to keep their eyes and ears open and share that she’s missing.”

Miller was suffering from dementia.

According to reports, police responded to Miller’s apartment complex for a welfare check on Dec. 27 and was told she had not been seen since Christmas Eve at about 7 p.m.

Benton said people there are nervous about colder temperatures there with night temperatures dipping to 21 degrees.

“Hopefully she has some shelter,” he said.

Miller’s family is having a tough time, said family friend Laura Hoffman-Miller, a Galion resident.

“They’re upset and don’t know what to do,” she said, adding that they are actively working with detectives.

Rachael Sidell, a Lucas County resident, is Miller’s niece.

She said she was close with Miller when the missionary served in Hong Kong as a nurse.

“We used to write back and forth about six times a month,” Sidell said. “She sent me a doll from China. It was the ugliest doll, but I still have to this day.”

Sidell said the family is a close, religious family which gives them comfort.

“We’re all a wreck,” she said. “We want to believe she’s OK, but we don’t know where she’s at,”

She said the family tried to get Miller to retire to Ohio, but she chose Georgia since it was warmer.

“It’s hard for us because we’re not from there,” Sidell said. “When she would come to visit, she liked to visit churches in Galion and Morrow County.

According to reports, Miller was last seen wearing glasses, an unknown color long dress, and black shoes. She is 5 feet 3 inches tall, weighing 90 pounds with long, gray hair and blue eyes.

Police are saying anyone with information about her location should call the Brookhaven Police Department at 404-637-0600.
