New Campaign encourages Ohioans to Drive Sober this Holiday Season

COLUMBUS, Ohio (December 2, 2015) – In an effort to curb drunk driving this holiday season, AAA Ohio Auto Club is launching a campaign, which encourages Ohioans to celebrate responsibly.

Drunk Driving Statistics:

Alcohol contributed to more than 12,600 crashes on Ohio’s roads in 2014, according to Department of Public Safety crash statistics. December was among the top months for impaired driving crashes, with more than 1,100 crashes, resulting in 630 injuries and 21 deaths occurring during this month alone.

Across the country, about one-third of all motor vehicle deaths involve an alcohol impaired driver. On average, an alcohol-impaired driving death occurs every 45 minutes.

Holiday Campaign:

This year, in order to encourage hosts and partygoers to celebrate responsibly, AAA Ohio Auto Club stores and Car Care Plus centers will be working to ensure customers remain on Santa’s “Nice List” by handing out holiday coasters outlining the following safe celebration tips:

– Plan Ahead: Don’t’ Drive Impaired – Choose a designated sober driver before any holiday celebration and NEVER get behind the wheel of a car when you’ve been drinking.

– Serve Non-Alcoholic Beverages – Host responsibly and never let guests drive drunk. Ohio’s host liability law holds those who serve alcohol liable for injury or death that occurs due to their drunk guests.

– Take the Pledge at PreventDUI.AAA.com – Pledge to drive drug and alcohol free, and share your pledge on social media, encouraging friends and family to do the same.

On the back of each coaster is one of four holiday “mocktail” (non-alcoholic cocktail) recipes for hosts to serve at holiday gatherings. AAA staff will discuss the dangers of impaired driving with customers, give them coasters to use during holiday celebrations, and encourage them to follow the tips provided to prevent impaired driving this holiday season.

This is the first year the auto club has held this campaign. Residents can pick up their free coasters at any AAA Ohio Auto Club location. A complete list of locations can be found at AAA.com/Locations.
