OHIO MEMBERS OF CONGRESS DEMAND THE PRESIDENT STAY THE DECISION TO RENAME MOUNT MCKINLEY – U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio), joined by Congressman Bob Gibbs, Speaker John Boehner, and 10 other Ohio Congressmen, sent a letter to President Obama demanding he reverse his decision to rename Mount McKinley and raising questions regarding the process and authority of Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell to take unilateral action. Secretary Jewell announced on August 30th, 2015 that she used a ‘Secretarial Order’ to change the name of Mount McKinley, overriding the Board of Geographic Names and ignoring pending legislation in the House of Representatives.

Portman, Gibbs, Boehner, and the congressmen wrote, “This unilateral action is troubling to many Americans as this honor speaks volumes of respecting our nation’s heroes and their patriotic work to better our nation. It is also upsetting that William McKinley’s legacy has been tarnished by a political stunt to promote a partisan agenda.”

The Mount McKinley National Park was designated by an Act of Congress in 1917. The Board of Geographic Names has a long-standing policy of not taking up any petitions for name changes while there is pending legislation in Congress. On January 21stof this year, the Ohio delegation introduced H.R. 437, a bill to provide for the retention of the name of Mount McKinley.

WITH DEADLINE APPROACHING, BROWN INVITES OHIOANS TO APPLY FOR NOMINATION TO U.S. SERVICE ACADEMIES – With the deadline to apply on Sept. 23 approaching, 2015, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) encouraged Ohioans to seek nomination from his office to U.S. Military Service Academies for 2016 admission.

“Ohio’s students have the integrity, courage, and knowledge needed to succeed in our nation’s prestigious military academies and I am honored to nominate students for this high honor,” said Brown. “These academies develop the next generation of leaders who will serve our country as military officers and national leaders.”

Each year, Brown nominates up to 10 students for each service academy requiring congressional recommendations: the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and the Merchant Marine Academy.
