Tigers run at Ashland cross county invite

ASHLAND — The boys and girls cross country teams from Galion High School made a trip up to Ashland on Saturday to compete in the annual Ashland Cross Country Invitational. In total, there were 13 boys teams and 18 girls teams in the crowded field.

Galion’s boys team finished in 10th overall while the Lady Tigers took 11th place. Winning the invitational on the boys side was the squad from Shelby. New Philadelphia, who took first and second individually, won the crown on the girls side of the event.

Rounding out the boys field were: 2. Smithville; 3. Triway; 4. Orrville; 5. Crestview; 6. Huron; 7. Northwestern; 8. Ontario; 9. Norwayne; 11. West Holmes; 12. St. Peter’s and 13. Clear Fork.

Caleb Brown from Shelby won the championship for the Whippets’ boys team with a finishing time of 15:42.4.

Braxton Tate was the top finisher for Galion. Tate took home sixth place with a time of 16:49.5.

Other Tigers in action Saturday were: Brendon Ganshorn- 18:59.1; Nathan Eckert- 19:11.7; Kurt Ensman- 19:25.8; Weston Rose- 19:26.7; Luke Eisnaugle- 19:30.7; Garret Murphy- 19:59.9; Hunter Parsley- 20:32.9; Zach Slone- 20:48.3; Simon Shawk- 20:52.7; Grayson Willacker- 21:32.1; Mikey Stover- 22:18.1 and Darren Brooks- 23:52.4.

On the girls side, the champion was Rachel Anderson from New Philadelphia with a time of 19:14.4.

Galion’s Lady Tigers had one top-25 finisher in the likes of Airyona Nickels. Nickels earned 21st overall, crossing the finish line with a time of 21:55.9.

Other Lady Tigers in action Saturday were: Sari Conner- 23:04.0; Theresa House- 23:26.0; Murissa Windbigler- 24:14.0; Ashlie Sallee- 25:06.7; Cheyenne Blair- 25:52.5; Amrara Ratcliff- 28:41.4 and Ashleigh Wright- 32:49.4.

Rounding out the placements in the girls field were: 2. Ontario; 3. Shelby; 4. Tiffin Columbian; 5. Smithville; 6. Huron; 7. West Holmes; 8. Orrville; 9. Western Reserve Academy; 10. Loudonville; 12. Madison; 13. Triway; 14. Crestview; 15. Waynedale; 16. Norwayne; 17. St. Peter’s and 18. Sandusky.

Both of the Galion teams will load the bus next Saturday to make the trip to Watkins Memorial High School to compete in the annual McGowan Invitational.
