Senior Chad Johnson back to defend his state championship

NORTH ROBINSON — The cross country squad at Colonel Crawford High School looks to continue their tradition of success again in 2017. Jody Grove is entering her 23rd season as the Crawford head coach.

This year’s team is led by senior Chad Johnson, who among other titles, won the Division III individual state championship.

Colonel Crawford’s boys team put together an impressive season in 2016, winning their annual Early Bird Invite championship, the Crawford County championship and the Northern-10 Athletic Conference championship, all while finishing as the district meet runners-up and taking fourth overall at the Tiffin Carnival.

Johnson will be joined by fellow letter winners Wade Hopkins, Braxton James, Alex Mutchler, Zach Leonhart and Brandon Bauer.

The Lady Eagles also had a banner year in 2016, earning a championship in the Early Bird Invite and the Crawford County cross country meet, while finishing as the runner-up in the N-10 and taking fourth overall at their district meet.

Returning for the Crawford girls squad are letter winners Courtney Britt, Courtney Lyons, Kari Teglovic and Katie Hopkins.

“Both teams lost key seniors and will be hoping to replace them with our incoming first-year athletes,” said Grove. “There is potential on both teams to be successful this season. Time will tell as the season progresses.”

Colonel Crawford’s annual Early Bird Invite, the Eagles only “home” meet in ‘17, will kick the season off on Saturday, August 26. The regular season is to conclude on Saturday, Oct. 14 at Seneca East High School when the Eagles will battle for the N-10 Conference championships.
