GALION — The Galion High School performing arts department continued a strong tradition again this school year.

For the fifth-consecutive year, the Galion Symphonic Band will compete in the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) State Large Group Adjudicated competition at Findlay High School.

The competition is April 21, 22.

The band, comprised of 40 members, earned a “Superior” rating at the OMEA Large Group District 2 contest at Oak Harbor High School on Saturday, March 11.

The band performed “Into the Clouds” by Richard L. Saucedo; “Chant and Jubilo” by Francis W. McBeth; and “Excelsior” by Karl King, arranged by Gene Milford.

“I am so very proud of our symphonic band, as they have spent months preparing for the incredible musical performance they gave at Oak Harbor,” said GHS Symphonic Band director Jessica Hammond. “It is beneficial to have this validation and helpful comments from the OMEA judges as we continue to focus on improving and honing in on specific skills to prepare for our performance at state.”

These adjudicated contests are subjective, but are essential in setting musical goals, which the group works as a unit to attain. In addition, every instrumental part and student is critical to the overall ensemble sound: balance, blend, intonation, and musical expression.”

Advancing to the state competition for the fifth year in a row is an amazing accomplishment,” said Superintendent Jim Grubbs. “The time, hard work and dedication of the symphonic band and Mrs. Hammond is paying big dividends and I am excited to see the results of their performance in Findlay.”
