Locals shine at state indoor track and field meet

AKRON — Members of the Galion and Colonel Crawford track and field teams were in competition this past weekend at the Stile Athletics Field House in Akron. The Tigers and Eagles faired well in The Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches (OATCCC) Indoor State Championships, including two state champions.

On the girls side of the event, Marisa Gwinner was the champion in the high jump, winning with a jump of five feet, five inches. Not only did this height earned Gwinner the crown, it qualified her for the New Balance National Meet in New York City.

Colonel Crawford also had a state champion in Chad Johnson. Johnson finished in first place in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:14.05.

Galion also had a seventh-place finish in the high jump from Kerrigan Myers at five feet. Samantha Mutchler from Colonel Crawford finished in fourth, also with a jump of five feet even.

The Tigers would have another national qualifier in the weight throw in Bri Streib. Streib finished 11th overall with a heavy of 41 feet even.

Gwinner and Streib will be competing at The Armory Track and Field Center on Friday.

As for the Galion boys, Colin McCullough was a state-placer in two events on the day. In the 400-meter dash, McCullough ran a time of 51.78 to finish seventh overall. McCullough also earned a sixth place finish in the 60-meter hurdle race, finishing the event in a time of 8.56.

In the weight throw, Brett May of the Tigers finished 17th with a toss of 47 feet, two inches.

Also placing for the Eagles boys squad on the day was Brad Bauer, finishing fifth in the 3,200-meter run (9:50.69) and Jaret Tinkey, 15th in the weight throw (47-8.
