Community to rally against drug addiction on Saturday

BUCYRUS — Six years ago, the Together We Hurt, Together We Heal group began hosting a Community Care March to raise awareness of drug addiction, a problem that plagues Crawford County today.

That effort is still going strong.

“This will be our sixth Community Care March,” said Mary Jean Hensley, one of the founding members of the Together group. “Our first one was held to bring awareness to the community about the increasing problem of substance abuse, the hurt it was causing families and the deaths occurring due to unintentional overdoses.

“The crowd that year was chilling, in that this had touched nearly every one of the approximately 1,500 people who attended, in one way or another.”

This year’s march will be in Bucyrus and will kick off at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Bucyrus Community Hospital Parking lot. It will make its way down Sandusky Avenue to the Bucyrus City Hall where several people will speak including, Bucyrus Mayor Jeff Reser, Bucyrus Police Chief Dave Koepke, EMT Corey Wright and Josh Spears, who will tell his story of addiction and recovery.

“We have held marches in towns around Crawford County because we want to bring hope to all of the people in our community. We want to let them know that there are people who have the resources that might help them or their loved one,” Hensley said.

Transportation for the march will be available for those unable to walk.

Hensley said the group continues to hold this event every year because the drug problem has not gone away.

“Education, support and intervention are still needed. Families still need encouragement. Those in recovery still need support and those lost in their addiction need us to keep praying and fighting for them. The families who have lost loved ones need to know they are not forgotten,” Hensley said. “We are a community. Please join us. You may be the missing link.”
