Galion’s South Park to get new restrooms

GALION — The city has received $66,000 from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources that will help build restrooms at South Park that are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The city applied for grant funding in May to replace the existing restroom, which was installed in 1965.

“The amount of grant funds we received was more than anticipated,” said Matt Echelberry, communications director for the city. “This is a project for next year and we will need to be bid it out, etc. The new restroom will be similar to the facility installed at East Park this year.”

The total cost of the project is about $96,000, and includes $65,000 for the new building, $10,000 for utilities, $15,000 for demolition of the old building, $5,000 for engineering and $1,000 for a concrete sidewalk.

“Formal notification of the NatureWorks Grant is good news,” said Mayor Tom O’Leary. “It’s especially good news for those Galionites who frequently visit South Park.”

The NatureWorks Grant is part of ODNR’s effort to fund local projects and expand nature trails. The ODNR has awarded $15 million in grants toward that project.
