Celebration of spring at Cooper’s Mill

Spring is a time of renewal and that will be the theme for the Celebration of Spring event at Cooper’s Mill and Market on Friday and Saturday when new products are rolled out.

The business, located at 1414 N. Sandusky Ave., was founded by David and Miriam Cooper in 1969 at their rural Bucyrus home and grew into its current location over the years. In March 2013, brothers Justin and Jason McMullen purchased Cooper’s Mill.

“The spring celebration is the anniversary of the re-opening of the store,” said store manager Rhonda Baldwin.

Debi Gifford handles marketing and corporate gifts for the business.

“It is also an opportunity for us to let our customers know how much they are appreciated,” Gifford said.

Cooper’s Mill is well-known for their apple butter that is made on-site by cooking the apples slowly in 50-gallon copper kettles over a wood fire. Dan Cooper has expanded from the family recipe to create new items. During last year’s celebration, customers were introduced to Dan Cooper’s Apple Butter Barbeque sauce. Since then, he has been busy creating new products for 2016.

“We have several new items including Strawberry Jalapeno Jam, Angry Peach BBQ Sauce, Blackberry Chipotle Sauce and Peach Apple Sauce,” Dan Cooper said.

Gifford said recipes come along with each of the new products.

“I made a chipotle salad dressing using the Blackberry Chipotle Sauce and the Strawberry Jalapeno Jam can be used to make a great steak sauce,” Gifford said.

In addition to the store-specific items created by Dan Cooper, the store’s assistant manager, Kelby Fulton, said there are several new items available that are made by other companies.

“We have two new ciders made by Troyer’s that include Granny Smith Apple and grape cider. We also offer taco cheese curds and a new cracker rack that includes three dessert crackers,” Fulton said.

Fulton said there also new deli meats available and jarred items such as stuffed olives.

Gifford said there will be product sales being offered throughout the weekend along with lunch from 11 am. to 1 p.m. offered by area Girl Scouts as a fundraiser for their troops.
