Annual festival begins Thursday

BUCYRUS – The theme is Brats, Beers & Cheers to Brattie’s 50 years.

The annual Bratwurst Festival celebrates a half-century of German sausage eating, along with parades, games, rides and fun in downtown Bucyrus this week.

The festival starts Thursday at noon and ends Saturday night. Here is a quick guide to remember when heading to the festival.

What’s new: This is the first year the festival will have a stage at the city’s new Schines Art Park on Sandusky Avenue. The venue will host performances each day of the festival.

Opening ceremony: For nearly all previous festivals local resident Boyd Long would carry the first brat to the stage where local officials and the reigning Bratwurst queen would await to sample it.

Long died this spring, so organizers have renamed the Thursday opening ceremony The Boyd Long Opening Ceremony in his honor. Long’s son is expected to present the first bratwurst in honor of his father.

Musical entertainment: New to perform is the Erick Gimbel Big Band, which will play at the Rensselaer Street stage 8 p.m. Friday.

Headliners at the FC Bank stage, in the bank’s parking lot on Sandusky Avenue, are Julie Neville on Thursday, Red Ball Jets on Friday and Electrik Circus on Saturday.

Rides: Tickets are $1.25 each, Value Pack 10 tickets for $10, Family Pack 24 for $20 with one free ride. All rides take two tickets or more. There are no refunds.

Animals: No animals are allowed in the festival area except those assisting with special needs. No bicycles, skateboards, rollerblades, or heelys allowed in the festival area per Bucyrus city ordinance.

History: The Bratwurst Festival was first celebrated in the summer of 1968. It is always held on the full third weekend of August. There are all kinds of activities to keep all ages entertained. There are daily parades, contests, auction and lots of food.

Thanks to festival sponsors, there is plenty of free live entertainment each day. For more information: www.bucyrusbratwurstfestival.com/information.html
