Contact Crawford County looking for volunteers

BUCYRUS — A Spring Training class for volunteers at CONTACT Crawford County is being planned. Anyone interested in finding out more about the local helpline is invited to attend the first class on April 3. This class is an orientation for the 30 hours of classroom training which is a requirement for answering the phone at CONTACT.

The training will be held at the Council on Aging, 200 S. Spring Street, in Bucyrus. Classes run for six weeks on Monday and Tuesday evenings from 6:30-8:30. Please call to register and to speak with a volunteer about any questions you have: 419-468-9081 or 419-562-9010.

Training is designed to prepare volunteers for the varied calls we receive. Active listening skills are the foundation of our service. We also provide information and referral services and field crisis calls for other agencies after hours. Our Reassurance program calls seniors at their homes in the daytime to provide a friendly visit and check on their safety.

A helpline is an asset to any community. This is the place to call to locate a food pantry, a support group meeting, or to find out how to reach the Game Warden. Friendly, caring people will help you find services for seniors or a pre-school for children. Without judgment, they will listen to your plans for the future or about the choices which have made your life difficult. They will take the time to laugh with you about a funny, family incident. For many communities, a dedicated staff of volunteers is the only way this can happen. We are looking for some caring people to join our great group of volunteers.
