Matty Monk returns home to Galion

GALION — “I’ve been a bit of a gypsy since then,” said Matty Monk during an interview outside of the Eighteen-0-Three Taproom on Friday. Monk was referencing the year 2004, when he graduated from Galion High School.

Matty and I were in school together. We played basketball together, but it was 2003 since we had actually held a conversation.

I remember vividly and reminded Matty of a conversation that we had what seems like a million years ago. The one about how I used to listen to crappy music and that I needed to educate myself. Throughout the very informal interview and break from his second set of the day in Galion, we caught up, shared stories of the shenanigans that we had gotten into since our teen years and of course enjoyed the ambiance provided by the Taproom.

The entire evening had that same very informal feel to it, as Monk played from roughly 9 p.m. to close at around 11:30.

He began his set with some original songs, songs that were down-tempo and self-described “sad songs.”

With a decent turnout, no one seemed to mind Matty’s song choices as he was the one in control. However, once Monk began to take requests and started playing cover songs, the house lightened up a bit.

“Anyone have any requests?” Monk asked. “If not, I’m going to keep playing these slow, sad songs because I’ve been drinking and I’m tired.”

Needless to say, there was no shortage of requests, from “Gangsta’s Paradise” by Coolio to “anything from Matchbox Twenty for $5.”

Monk obliged most every request, regardless of whether or not he knew the lyrics or how to transcribe it all to keyboard. Although it was a tough listen, he played “Make You Feel My Love” by Bob Dylan for yours truly (Thanks brother!).

Monk’s music can be purchased at Google Play, Amazon Music, iTunes and is also available for streaming on Spotify or YouTube.
