Fourteen Galion school staff members honored

A total of 14 retiring teachers and staff members were recognized by the Galion Board of Education last week. Each of them worked in education for at least 20 years. Superintendent Mark Stefanik noted there was more than 230 years of combined experience just in the eight retirees who were in the room that evening.

The retirees were: Christine Cletzer, 37 years; Ronda Cullen, 31 years; Joylynn Finch, 30 years; Lisa Fingerhuth, 28 years; Alice Fox, 29 years; Lynn Goldsmith, 22 years; Dennise Holtzapfel, 21 years; Catherine Murphy, 21 years; Melinda Nicholls, 30 years; Juanita Nungesser, 20 years; Richard Predmore, 39 years; Denman Ray, 30 years; JoAnn Wiggins, 34 years; and Cheryl Wood, 37 years.

They each received a personalized clock — a longstanding tradition in the district.

In addition, resignations from Randy Endsley and Amy Buzard were also accepted during the meeting.

With so many employees leaving, the next step for the Board was approving people to fill those positions. The superintendent explained that during April and May, extensive interviews were conducted. “I’m excited about all of these folks,” Stefanik said. “But we’re not finished filling yet empty positions yet.”

The Board approved Deanna Albert and Laura Moore as kindergarten teachers, Paula Prince as a fifth grade teacher, Richard Ratvasky II as Elementary art teacher, Paula Thomas as a High School math teacher, Rachel Gangwer as a Middle School math teacher and Lisa Zupan as Middle School guidance counselor.

Kevin Dickinson was reassigned as a Middle School/High School art teacher and Marsha Garverick was reassigned as a fifth grade teacher.

Lastly, Jennifer Allerding was approved for a two-year contract as the new principal of Galion Middle School. Allerding comes from Massillon, OH, where she was a principal. She was in attendance that night to meet the Board.

Outgoing principal Andy Johnson is staying at the district through October, and will help with the transition process.
